Gun Violence Prevention Resolution
On September 24, 2018, the Vestry of St. Mark’s Capitol Hill approved a resolution drafted by the St. Mark’s Outreach Board earlier in the month and signed by the Rector and Senior Warden on September 25, 2018. Read the Resolution on Gun Violence Prevention.
National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence
On December 5-6, 2018, St Mark’s once again hosted the Newtown Foundation (the charitable arm of the Newtown Action Alliance), in partnership with Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence, States United to Prevent Gun Violence, Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and Organizing for Action for the Annual National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence. The Vigil service was held Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at 7 p.m., at St Mark’s Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill, Washington D.C.
On December 14, 2012, twenty-seven people died in a mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Later that month, the National Cathedral hosted a vigil in honor of the victims. Since 2013, the vigil has been held at St. Mark’s to enable family and friends of victims, who travel from all over the country, to lobby Congress on Capitol Hill for common sense gun violence prevention.
St. Mark’s parishioners provide hospitality for those who travel to Washington for the vigil and lobby days and take part in planning the vigil service. Watch for announcements to sign up for specific volunteer opportunities. Contact Cecilia Monahan if you would like to volunteer for this year’s vigil.
